Resiliency and The Little Rock 9
Anticipatory set:
Think for 1 minute of a time when you had to decide whether or not to stand up for yourself.
If you wish to share, write a couple words to describe the situation on a post it note.
“This group place what you’ve written in this corner of the room…”
Standard: 8 Assessment: The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of his/her learners.
Objective: To develop and encourage self support strategies through sharing stories of resiliency.
Instructional input:
Together form a definition of resiliency
Have students stand up and read aloud from numbered strips of paper with short sentences the story of The Little Rock 9.
Modeling:
Reading aloud effectively and showing attentive listening
Sharing personal story
Checking for understanding:
Revisit definition of resiliency
Move about the room and read post-its
Share stories
Independent practice:
Homework: with a significant other, think about a story of resiliency. It can be personal or historical.
Write one page about their story and how they overcame something difficult in life.
Tomorrow, offer 1 suggestion/strategy of what we can do to get through a really hard moment.
