Hatchet

Objective: The 5th grade learner will be able to recognize the resiliency shownin the book and movie, Hatchet.

INTASC Outcomes:
4. The teacher understands and used a variety of instructionalstrategies to encourage students' development of criticalthinking,problem solving, and performance skills.
6. The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, andmedia communication techniques to foster active inquiry,collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
7. The teacher plans instruction based upon knowledge of subjectmatter, the community, and curriculum goals.

Anticipatory Set: Students are asked to write five words in their journal that come totheir mind when they hear the word, resilient.

Procedure: This lesson is intended to be done after reading the book, Hatchet
1. Ask the students to share some of the words they wrote downand list them on the side of the board
2. Ask the students if they can think of any events in the bookthat demonstrate their words relating to resilience
3. Ask them what they can learn from Hatchet

Conclusion: Have the students write two lessons they can use from Hatchet intheir journal.
